Can a radar gun detect you from the side?
'I was reading the Valentine One radar detector manual and it said that "radar cannot detect you from the side" so i was wondering if that could be true. Though i see cops all the time sitting by the side of highways and streets that are perpendicular to the road with their guns on?
What the manual means is that a radar gun can not measure your speed if the radar gun itself is pointed 90 degrees from you to the side of your vehicle. It's not talking about the cop car being along side the road when it nails you. As long as the cop car is not too far from the road you are traveling on it does not matter what angle the cop car itself is sitting at as the cop is usually holding the radar gun in his hand aimed in the direction traffic is coming from. Even if the cop car was sitting further from the road the further from the road he was the lower the reading he would get (i.e. it would read a lower speed in your favor).
Warning, they are working on a video based speed detection system that uses a video camera hooked up to a computer. It calculates the time it took you to travel from one point to another in the video to determine your speed and radar detectors are worthless against the system as they can not detect it. Have been hearing about it for at least 2 or 3 years do I don't know if it still has issues or not or if the system was determined too expensive. But if they ever do start using it radar detectors will do you no good anymore.
